Raising Our Hands in Prayer

Sr Cindy

On this 800 year anniversary of the death of our beloved Saint Francis, we held a Transitus service at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. As in many of the things we do, it did not go entirely to plan. It was a beautiful service and as we reached the part where we raise our hands in prayer and pray together, the fire alarm in the church went off. Perhaps we used a bit too much incense?  There was a great lesson there. We kept our hands raised, and we kept on praying even as the loud buzzer kept going off and the service just kept going, and we kept praying and we just continued. In the times we live in with all the alarms continuously going off and all of the catastrophe and violence all around the world, we keep our arms raised to God and we pray and praise God, and we try to follow the lessons of our beloved Francis.
